Moss on the roof
Moss growth on roofs is an increased risk factor for damage. Moss and lichens attract moisture and water, which can lead to extensive problems. Roofs with a lot of moss also look more neglected, which can reduce the value of your property. Takteam has extensive experience in the industry and will help you have a healthy roof. Feel free to contact us and we will schedule a free inspection.
Why does moss grow on roofs?

Moss, algae and lichens thrive in dark and damp environments. That’s why they grow especially well on the shady side of a roof. A new roof has a natural protection applied to the surface that makes it difficult for roots to take hold. Over time, this protection will wear down. Moss thrives on:
- Shady places – The sun’s rays cannot heat and dry roof tiles that are shaded by, for example, a tree, which means that the moisture remains.
- Roof slope – A roof with a steep slope allows water to drain more easily. A gentle slope allows water to remain more easily.
- Worn surface layer – The natural surface layer on the roof will be worn down by weather and wind, creating a surface on which moss and other growth can more easily take hold.
Fouling can form and start to grow on your roof for several reasons. Once the vegetation has taken hold, it will absorb water and reduce drainage. Moisture and water contribute to moss growing even more. In winter, the liquid-filled roots will expand, which can lead to cracks in the roof.
Moss thrives in particular in the joints between roof tiles, for example, and can cause them to move. If the roof is not in place, water has a free path into the structure. When water can find its way into the building, rot damage can occur. Rot damage causes wood, for example, to rot and spread to other parts of the building.
Increased amounts of water remaining on the roof, combined with cracks that it can find its way into, often leads to water damage. This type of water damage can easily become extensive and very costly.
Something that causes a lot of wear and tear on the roof’s surface layer is the sun’s UV rays. UV rays in combination with leaves, needles, weather and wind wear down the protective surface layer. The surface layer is present when the roof is new or after a roof treatment has been carried out.
If moss is allowed to continue to live on the roof year after year, the lifespan of the roof will be shortened. Take care of your property in the best way possible by taking care of the most important thing, the roof.
Remove moss from roof

Having moss on your roof is not good, so how do you clean moss off your roof? Even though the roof may look very dirty at first glance with all the vegetation, you should not take out the pressure washer and rinse it off – the chance is greater that the roof will be damaged more than cleaned. Using a pressure washer can also cause your roof to become really slippery, which can make it even more difficult to walk on. To work safely, the right equipment is required in the form of fall protection and ropes.
When cleaning a roof, it is important to use the right method based on the material and condition of the roof. It is important to clean the roof of all material that falls down and gets stuck. Material can be, for example, leaves, pollen and bird droppings. Much of it disappears due to rain and wind, but not all of it. Some remains on the roof and will act as fertilizer for moss. Moss thrives in an acidic environment and will quickly begin to grow.
After the roof is cleaned on the surface, it may look clean at first glance, but it also requires a treatment that gets to the deeper roots that are not visible. Various agents are applied that can penetrate deep down and ensure that all moss is removed from your roof.
Roofing teams therefore always start by carrying out a free inspection of your roof.
